The Water Cube

The Context The Water Cube is the National Aquatic Centre firstly used in Beijing Olympic Games in 2008. It is also a landmark of the City of Beijing.

Challenge 1: the selection process was severe. Facing the scrutiny of design experts and society, we also felt the pressure. Challenge 2: how to represent the Water Cube? As the architecture of the Water Cube has been already well-known internationally, it was not easy to surpass its original design. The question was how our design could make impression on people.

In Chinese culture, ‘water’ is a crucial natural element which can inspire people, while a ‘square’ is the basic structure of a building, a symbol of disciplines and morals. Bases on this concept, we created a ‘box-shaped’ logo to represent the multi-functions of the Water Cube and the beauty of Chinese culture and architecture.
